Thoughts on Spiritual Gifts – Nancy Gavilanes

This month marks a major milestone in my faith walk. God called me to follow Him during one Amazing Week in September in Sydney, Australia. What a journey it’s been! I’ll be sharing more milestones soon. Here’s a few thoughts on spiritual gifts.

I’ve taken different spiritual gifts tests over the years. I usually score high in exhortation, evangelism and faith.

This top 3 is new for me (see pic above).

There’s a New Season loading .. 🙌

Thanks for staying on this faith journey with me 🙏

I still remember the first time I took a spiritual gifts test.

Back then, I kept hearing people at church say they had a “ministry” but I wasn’t sure what that meant. I thought I had missed a meeting when ministries were handed out.

When my church offered a class about spiritual gifts, I signed up. That’s when I took my first spiritual gifts test.

I was still new in my faith journey, but I’d already been serving at church.

I was stunned when I scored high in pastoring.

Who me?

Yup.

My teacher explained that many times people with the gift of pastoring are drawn to joining the Care ministry.

Oh! I was already the Care Leader in my small group for young adults.

I love how I was already serving and using my spiritual gift of pastoring by helping to shepherd and care for the flock God had entrusted to me in that season.

In typical fashion, I sometimes back into something without even realizing it’s the Lord leading me.

I also scored high in exhortation. I hadn’t heard that word before taking the class. (Why did it sound so much like extortion?)

When I found out it meant encouraging people, I was a bit disappointed.

So my gift was to cheer people on as they did something simple like crossing the street? (Not sure why that example came to mind at that moment?)

I wasn’t thrilled but it did confirm what a ministry leader had already recognized in me. I did like to encourage people.

As I grew in my faith and kept serving and encouraging people, I embraced my spiritual gift.

I remember a sister in Christ reminded me that people really need encouragement. That stuck with me.

I also scored high in evangelism. Oh, that would explain why I delighted in inviting friends and family to church and giving them Bibles and praying for strangers, etc.

Again, I was operating in my gifting without knowing it.

No wonder the very first time I volunteered at my church it was for a block party they were hosting (ah, community outreach is a form of evangelism).

It was my spiritual gifts teacher who first made the connection that my journalism background was a great match with my evangelism gift.

I had been wondering how I could use my writing background to bless others.

I was delighted to write Care notes to members of my small group.

That’s around the time I started to feel God calling me to write and speak for His glory.

As a native New Yorker, I’ve grown up with the nations all around me.

And God loves to speak to me whether I’m home or abroad.

God called me to follow Him while I was in Australia.

I felt God calling me to be an evangelist during a trip to Israel.

I’m so grateful I took a class on spiritual gifts at that particular time in my faith journey.

Taking that spiritual gifts class helped to bring clarity in some areas and confirm some things to me.

The teacher mentioned that our results could change over the years. We could grow stronger in some gifts in different seasons of life. He mentioned it was good to take a look at our top 3 gifts and also to take the test again at a later date.

I waited a few years before I took a different spiritual gifts test.

That time I scored high in the gift of faith. That made sense as the Lord had stretched my faith during five short-term missions trips to five countries. I had also grown in my faith as I read and studied the Bible and had seen God’s faithfulness in my life and the lives of others around me.

This was also somewhere around the time I was launching my AboundingFaith.com website and writing books, speaking to groups and teaching at a Bible school.

I’m still so touched when people share that what I’ve said or written was exactly what they needed to hear in that moment.

Whether it’s a person in tears in front of me thanking me or a Reader sending me a kind note, I know it’s not me. It’s the Holy Spirit working through me.

As I look at my latest spiritual gifts test results and see gifts like apostleship, prophecy and knowledge take the lead in this season, it can feel daunting but it’s also confirmation as I continue to write, speak, teach, coach, etc.

Of course, we’re to worship God more than His gifts, but it’s good to learn about spiritual gifts.

Here’s a few thoughts and Bible verses about spiritual gifts:

  • They are given by the Holy Spirit – “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.” (1 Corinthians 12:4 NIV)
  • The Holy Spirit chooses our spiritual gifts – “All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.” (1 Corinthians 12:11 NIV)
  • They are given to bless others – “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV)
  • All the gifts are special. We don’t have to compete or covet someone else’s gifts – “There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.” (1 Corinthians 5-6 NIV)
  • Gifts don’t just go away – “for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.” (Romans 11:29 NIV)
  • We’re to develop and exercise our gifts to SHINE for Christ – “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16 NIV)
  • There are good works that only we can do – “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10 NIV)
  • We’re to follow God’s plan for our life – “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” (Ephesians 4:1 NIV)

You can read all of 1 Corinthians 12 to learn more about spiritual gifts.

Over the years, I’ve learned that you can use different spiritual gifts in different settings. I’ve seen that especially while on the mission field or during outreaches where it feels like all the spiritual gifts are available to any one of us so we can be the hands and feet of Jesus in any given moment.

As you grow in your faith, I hope you’ll get curious about your spiritual gifts and find ways to use those gifts to be a blessing to your family, church and community.

As you grow in your relationship with Jesus, you’ll also grow in your spiritual gifts.

I hope my books will help encourage and empower you as you walk by abounding faith, hope and love and dare to live your God-given dreams.

If you’re interested in learning more about having me come alongside of you on your faith journey as your life coach, visit this page.

I hope my devotional articles for the Our Daily Bread devotional will also encourage you on your faith journey. Writing these devotional articles makes my evangelistic and exhorter heart sing.

That’s part of the beauty of operating in our spiritual gifts. As we are a blessing to others, we usually also feel blessed.

To God be the Glory!

P.S. I’m also talking about spiritual gifts in Episode 77 of the Abounding Faith for Today podcast that’s available wherever you get your podcasts.

Reflecting on a Decade of Abounding Faith with Nancy Gavilanes

This year marks many major milestones for my work and ministry through Abounding Faith.

As I look back on this past decade, I’m in awe of God’s faithfulness. And I’m grateful for all the breakthroughs and God-given dreams He’s allowed me to experience.

After years of preparing me through prayer, studying the Bible, serving in the local church, going on outreaches across NYC and on five short-term missions trips to five countries and going to Bible school, the Lord called me into this season of writing, speaking, teaching and more for His glory!

It’s been a long and winding journey, but God has been leading and guiding me every step of the way.

Hope you enjoy this short video with highlights from the past decade.

As you may know, I’m a journaler turned journalist turned author.

This past decade, God has allowed me to write and contribute to 7 books and host 10 events. Glory!

Here’s a timeline of some of the highlights from these 10 years of being an author, speaker and more:

  • 2025 – 20th devotional article published in Our Daily Bread, reached 1,000 Followers on Instagram and working on different projects (stay tuned)

I couldn’t have done all of this on my own.

I’m so thankful for God’s grace as well as for the love and support from my family, my praying friends, all my Readers near and far, my Email Community, those who’ve attended my events over the years and those who’ve invited me to speak at their church and to their group, whether in person or online.

Some friends and partners along the way have included my CWEN Sisters, The Bowery Mission’s Women’s Center, Queens AGLOW, local pastors, my friends at the upstate church and local nursing homes and many others.

I appreciate your continued prayers as I plan for the next decade and beyond.

This faith journey isn’t as easy or glamorous as you may think.

It takes much prayer, dedication, perseverance, hard work, creativity and FAITH!

Encore “Divine Design” Blog Post by My Mom

I’m delighted to be sharing this encore of my Mom’s “Divine Design” blog post. You can hear me reading my Mom’s lovely blog post in episode 73 of the Abounding Faith for Today podcast that’s available wherever you listen to podcasts. My Mom’s blog post originally ran in 2013.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I’ve asked my Mom to share some encouraging thoughts with you.  Blessings!

I have always loved butterflies! The last time I visited the Bronx Zoo, I was amazed at seeing all the beautiful butterflies in the Butterfly Garden. Each one had its own unique design and colors. No two looked alike.

How wonderful God is that He would take His time to design each and every butterfly.

God has taken great care to create each and every one of us as well. He has patience with us as we transform from ordinary caterpillars into exquisite and unique butterflies! We are all precious in His sight!

Remember that you are special to God and that you are created in His image. He loves you more than you can imagine!

 “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:14)

Happy New Year! My One Word for 2025

We’ve made it to 2025, Praise God!

As I look ahead to this new year, I’m ready to prayerfully continue moving forward and continue experiencing even more breakthroughs.

My One Word for this year that I’d like to share is:

FRUITFUL

I’m praying this year and beyond will be filled with much fruit.

I’ll be meditating and standing on many Bible verses including:

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” (John 15:16 NIV)

We’re CHOSEN to BEAR FRUIT!

If you’ve read my book God-Given Dreams: 6 Ways to Live Your Divine Purpose (NavPress) you’ll recognize that Chosen is one of the Six Cs of Transformation.

I’m praying it’ll be another year of milestones and open doors.

I’m trusting it’ll be a year of Harvest and Jubilee!

We’re to grow in the Fruit of the Spirit:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23 NIV)

And God’s got good works for us to do as it says in Ephesians 2:10 (NIV):

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

I’ve got a few book anniversaries coming up this year. I hope you’ll celebrate with me.

I also plan to continue writing, speaking, teaching, podcasting, coaching and more.

Please stay tuned for more details.

Thanks again for staying on this faith journey with me.

If you’re new around here, WELCOME!

  • Nothing Surprises God
  • If God is for Us, who can be against Us
  • Greater is He who is in Us than he who is in the World
  • Jesus has Overcome the World

God-Given Dreams Book Launch – What an honor and joy it was to celebrate the launch of my very first traditionally published book in March! I’m so grateful for the family, friends and Readers who helped me celebrate this God-given dream come true and major writing milestone. The first half of the year was a whirlwind that included:

  • Speaking at online events, including encouraging my Christian friends working at the United Nations
  • I’m thrilled that authors Ann Voskamp, Jennifer Rothschild and Pam Farrel all helped spread the word about God-Given Dreams
  • I so appreciate those who endorsed my book including: Joyce Dinkins, Rebecca Garcia, Edward Gilbreath, Anthony Hewitt, Chris Luppo, Dr. Elizabeth Tamez Méndez and Rochelle Traub

Our Daily Bread Devotional Author – After years of waiting and praying and after writing behind the scenes, I’m so excited that my devotional articles are now being published in the Our Daily Bread devotional that reaches people all around the globe and is translated into 50+ languages! I’m so honored that my first article was a tribute to my Mom and my family’s salvation story and it ran on Mother’s Day this year! Only God could do that. I’m also touched whenever I get to share stories about my Dear Dad, my Hispanic heritage and my short-term missions trips. I share more thoughts and reflections in this blog post and Episode 64 of the Abounding Faith for Today podcast. Greetings to my ODB Readers! Thanks for your sweet messages! So glad you’re being encouraged by my devotional articles.

NYSB Instructor – It’s been another wonderful year of teaching online courses through the New York School of the Bible! I once again had such lovely students. I’m so grateful to have this space where we can come together as sisters in Christ (even if sometimes we’re in different states) to read and glean insight from Scripture and encourage one another in these online courses based on the Bible and many of my books. Only God could do that! Stay tuned for more information about the online courses I’ll be teaching in 2025.

Speaking – In addition to the interviews I did for radio, podcasts and online shows and the groups I spoke to during my book launch, I also spoke at:

  • Publishing in Color Conference – It was a blessing to get to pray for attendees (virtually) for the spring conference and to once again be a presenter at the fall conference
  • CWEN – What a joy it was to continue sharing encouraging devotional and prayer times with my CWEN Sisters. It’s always an honor to get to encourage my fellow female entrepreneurs with entries from my book Feisty Faith: Trusting God Day by Day (available on Amazon).

My True Gold Medal Moment (My Testimony)

As a little girl, I wasn’t interested in watching the Olympics. Even though my Mom told my sister and me that it only took place every four years, I wanted to play with my dolls instead.

As a teen, I became enthralled with the beauty and pageantry and the excitement of elite figure skating and gymnastics competitions.

I was hooked on the Olympics!

I inhaled every skating or gymnastics competition on TV. I’d record the competitions or exhibitions and watch them over and over again.

I was mesmerized.

I was sooo enamored with the Olympics that I started taking figure skating AND gymnastics lessons.

I’m so grateful to my parents for spending hours shuttling me to or from skating or gymnastics lessons (I actually got good driving practice with my Dad on the way to the gym.)

My parents also enjoyed taking me to watch skating shows and buying me skating and gymnastics magazines and memorabilia.

I didn’t just want to be in the gym or rink, I wanted to meet all my favorite Olympians.

Amazingly, I got to meet many of them during a prestigious gymnastics summer camp I went to.

That wasn’t enough.

My Dear Dad also took us to watch our very first Gymnastics Olympic Trials. I think I went to watch two more Olympic Trials live after that.

That still wasn’t enough.

I dreamed of traveling to all the Olympic stadiums around the world.

I was amazed that I got to visit the Olympic stadium in Athens Greece as a teen when my parents sent my sister and me on a trip to Europe through my high school.

I still wanted more.

My obsession with the world’s biggest sporting event would compel me to study journalism. Although there were several reasons why I majored in journalism, my ultimate dream was to go to an Olympics as a reporter.

Where did I get that audacious dream?

I’m not sure, but I’d go on to meet and interview or photograph many of my favorite Olympians.

You can see a few pics from what I call my “Olympiac Daze” in this short video.

And amazingly, my dream of going to an Olympics as a reporter and spectator came true very early on in my journalism career.

I went to the Summer Olympics to chase elite athletes.

God had a divine plot twist for me.

God chased me down at the Olympics.

My life has never been the same.

I still write and speak about that moment because God met me in such a special way that day in Olympic Park.

MY TRUE GOLD MEDAL MOMENT

It was my last day at the Olympics. I had had a wonderful week attending some events, meeting some athletes, and soaking in all the sights and sounds.

I loved seeing the world come together in PEACE for this global sporting event. I loved hearing the different languages being spoken and seeing the fans and athletes wearing their flags with pride and cheering for their home countries. I reveled in all the festivities I could.

Making it to an Olympics was my gold medal moment.

Or so I thought.

I had been captivated by making it to the Games for so many years. But on my final day there, I still felt empty.

I had gotten myself to the other side of the world and it still wasn’t enough.

I realized it would never be enough.

On my last day there, I was at Olympic Park crying.

I think all of my Mom’s and sister’s prayers finally kicked in.

God had finally gotten my attention.

I realized I didn’t deserve all these blessings and wonderful experiences.

I had been running away from God.

As I pursued my journalism career and my passion for sports, I had drifted further and further from God.

I loved God, but I had tried to put Him on a shelf.

I was making my plans and asking God to bless them.

I had my own dreams and desires and vision for my life.

I had gotten myself pretty far.

Notice, all the “I’s” in my recent statements?

I had been rebelling against God and not asking Him for guidance and direction.

Big mistake.

There at Olympic Park, I was overwhelmed by God’s grace and love and mercy.

Without a pastor or evangelist near me, I surrendered my life to God.

Looking back, that was my ultimate Gold Medal Moment.

OUR DREAMS VS. GOD’S DREAMS FOR US

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying sports or exceling in your career.

But if your identity, worth, and value are wrapped up in your interests, hobbies, career, title, or relationships, watch out.

Does God have first place in your heart?

God wants to be at the center of our life.

God wanted to be at the center of my heart.

At the Olympics and soon afterward, God graciously showed me that I had made idols out of sports and my career.

That was a defining and sacred moment when God called me at the Olympics. He later called me to lay down my journalism career. (Please note He doesn’t ask everyone to do that.)

I’ve been on a faith adventure ever since.

That journey has been long and winding, but has included many adventures including going to Israel (years ago) as well as going on five short-term missions trips to five countries.

It’s also included serving as a prayer counselor at a Billy Graham Crusade and a Luis Palau Festival and training as a volunteer chaplain.

I’m now using my writing and speaking gifts to encourage people as they walk by abounding faith, hope, and love and dare to live their God-given dreams. You can learn more at AboundingFaith.com.

I’ve spoken to a group of Christians working at the United Nations, students at a Christian college, given my brief testimony at an evening service at Times Square Church, and more. I’ve also hosted a few of my own events and am now a contributing writer for Our Daily Bread Ministries.

I’m also a Bible school instructor. Surprisingly enough, one of my recent students was a two-time Olympian. Only God could orchestrate that!

None of these were my idea.

I’ve just continued to try to follow as the Lord leads.

I’m honored to be the author of six Christian living books and devotionals.

I write about how God called me to follow Him in my new book God-Given Dreams: 6 Ways to Live Your Divine Purpose (NavPress, available wherever books are sold) and in By Faith: Adventures and Reflections on Walking With God Here and Abroad (available on Amazon).

After God met me at a Summer Olympics, He allowed me to go to a Winter Olympics as a reporter and spectator. That was another incredible experience, but by then God was Lord of my life.

I’m so grateful that I can now enjoy the Olympics like a regular fan at home.

I still get excited and cheer for the athletes to do their best. I admire their hard work and dedication.

But my identity isn’t wrapped around who I’m meeting or interviewing.

I’m sharing parts of my story to inspire you and as a cautionary tale.

We can have dreams for our life, but have we checked in with God?

That’s why my latest book is titled God-Given Dreams.

God has even better dreams for us than we could ever hope or imagine (Ephesians 2:20-21 NIV).

God has given us gifts, talents, and abilities.

God has good works ordained for us to do (Ephesians 2:10 NIV).

Have you asked God how He wants you to use those gifts, talents, and abilities to honor Him?

I love when athletes thank God right when they win their competition.

RUN YOUR RACE WELL

We may not be athletes, but did you know that we’re all in a race?

We’re not competing against each other though.

In the following Bible verses, the apostle Paul compared a Christian’s journey to being in a race:

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” (1 Corinthians 9:24-27 NIV)

Earthly crowns and medals and wealth will fade one day. The apostle Paul encouraged the believers in Corinth, and us, to be disciplined as we live for Christ. He is our true and lasting treasure.

Everything else pales in comparison to the hope we have of heaven through Jesus.

The writer of Hebrews encouraged readers, and us, to run the race marked for us with perseverance. Life is a marathon, not a sprint:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV)

As we keep our eyes on Jesus and consider all that He endured on the Cross for us, we won’t grow weary or lose heart along our journey.

If you’ve been running away from God like I was, I encourage you to run toward Him.

God loves you!

We can’t outrun God’s love for us!

May these Bible verses inspire you as you run your race:

“Do you not know? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;

but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:28-31 NIV)

NOTE ABOUT PICS

I’m so grateful that God has allowed me to experience many of my Olympic dreams over the years. The above pics are from FOUR Olympic sites (I’ve also driven past the stadium in Los Angeles.)

Why do I still get excited about the Olympics? I love it when the world comes together in PEACE. It’s still a thrill to watch the world’s best athletes come together in friendly (but fierce) competition. When the elite athletes are at their best, they’re amazing.

Three Cheers with Lemonade for this Month’s Birthday Girl 🎉🎉🎉💃💃💃Celebrating My Dear Dad: Roctober Edition: This pic “happened” to come up as a memory recently and it made me smile. We were actually celebrating my bday with mi familia in this pic. My Dad LOVED celebrating our birthdays and in later years got a kick out of saying “Happy Birth Month” to me. LOL We’d celebrate at the beginning and end of the month and sometimes in between😀 My Dad reveled in family, food and fiestas. My birthdays started out with McDonald’s parties and somewhere around my teen years I would be MORTIFIED when mariachis would pop out of nowhere at the restaurants. As an adult, I learned to appreciate the mariachis more. LOL Aww, rejoicing in celebrating the birth of his second daughter… That’s My Dad 💖
