Christ Loves the Nations – Nancy Gavilanes

As the world once again comes together for friendly but fierce sports competition at this year’s Winter Olympics, my evangelistic and exhorter heart is ready to burst.

As you may know, as a young journalist God allowed me to go to a Summer and Winter Games as a reporter and spectator.

He called me to follow Him while I was at a Summer Games. You can read about that in God-Given Dreams (NavPress) and By Faith (available on Amazon).

After God asked me to lay down my journalism career and to let go of my obsession with sports, which had become idols for me, I still had a love for the Nations.

As a Latina from New York who has traveled to 6 continents and gone on five short-term missions trips to five countries, I truly see that Christ LOVES the Nations!

I’m so grateful that my books, Abounding Faith for Today podcast episodes, YouTube videos, blog posts, social media posts and more can travel further and faster than I ever could.

I’m also so honored that my devotional articles for the Our Daily Bread devotional are translated into more than 50 languages and are available worldwide in print and online.

Only God could help me reach the nations for His Glory!

Oh, the world is far from perfect.

But God LOVES the Nations!

From His covenant with Abraham in Genesis, to His messages through many of the Old Testament prophets, to the Gospels and Paul’s writings, and all the way to Revelation, God speaks about the Nations all throughout the Bible.

God’s family is located all across the globe.

The Body of Christ is international.

Let’s remember to love and serve and pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ living worldwide.

Here are some of my favorite Bible verses about the Nations:

Jesus Came to Save the World – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17)

We’re to Make Disciples of All Nations – “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” (Matthew 28:18-20)

We’re to Reach the Ends of the Earth – “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

The Nations Worship in Heaven – “After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice:

‘Salvation belongs to our God,

who sits on the throne,

and to the Lamb.’” (Revelation 7:9-10)

God Reigns Over All Nations – “He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.” (Daniel 7:14)

God’s Covenant with Abraham Still Stands- “I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”(Genesis 22:17-18)

We’re One in Christ – “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:28-29)

Jesus is for All People – “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” (John 12:32)

God Rules – “All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations. (Psalm 22:27-28)

One Day the World Will Bow – “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2 : 9-11)

The Nations are Part of Our Inheritance – “Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.” (Psalm 2:8)

Can you feel God’s heart for the Nations?

God loves us and sent Jesus for us no matter what city, country or continent we were born in.

May we be filled with God’s immeasurable love for the Nations!

Let’s continue to pray, “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

3 Lessons Learned from My Figure Skating Days – Nancy Gavilanes

With the 2026 Winter Olympics now underway, it’s got me thinking of my Olympiac Daze. Growing up, I was so enthralled with figure skating and gymnastics that I took lessons in both sports during high school.

I wasn’t an elite athlete, but I learned many valuable lessons from both sports that have stayed with me all these years. I’ll just focus on skating for now.

3 Lessons Learned From My Figure Skating Days:

Get Back Up – One of the first skills we learn on the ice is how to get back up after a fall. Falls are inevitable while skating. Even the most seasoned skaters fall sometimes. It’s not a matter of if, but when. I fell plenty of times on the ice. It was never fun, but it was actually a sign that I was being brave and trying new skills. It could also be a sign that I was distracted or needed more practice. The point was to not wallow on the ice but to get back up quickly, try to learn from the experience and to keep skating. The same is true in life. Falling, or failing or making mistakes or facing rejection, is part of life. Trials have a way of trying to knock us off our feet. Whenever that happens, may we prayerfully get back up quickly. Sure there’s a time to reflect on what happened and to heal or to take a break as needed, but let’s not stay stuck wallowing on the ice. Let’s be quick to get back up and keep living life one day at a time. I’m reminded of this Bible verse, “for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.” (Proverbs 24:16 NIV)

Persistence is Key – I didn’t start doing jumps and spins during my first skating lessons. First I learned to glide and skate forward and backwards. Then I learned how to balance on different edges and learned the simple bunny hop and 2-foot spin. Then I started working on a lunge, sit spin, camel spin and single jumps, etc. Each skill built off each other. I practiced my spins and jumps over and over again. Yes, things get a little blurry while spinning but you get used to it and it can actually feel quite thrilling. And yes, for me it was scary to jump off the ice, but I’m glad I tried it. There’s no shortcuts. I just had to put the reps in over time and had to build strength working out with weights at the gym and when doing gymnastics. In life, we like to rush ahead but we can’t skip the process. We need to keep learning and growing and adding to the skills we’re learning. Each experience helps us gain the wisdom and knowledge and strength we need to keep moving forward.

Be a Good Steward of Your Time and Talent – I had to balance school and homework and then rush off to the rink, gym or gymnastics lessons and I was part of the high school newspaper. My schedule was packed. I didn’t have much time to slack off. When it was time to study, I had to study. Thankfully,, my grades didn’t suffer. I even made it into the National Honor Society. When I was on the ice, I had to be all there. Same was true when I was doing gymnastics. I was juggling a lot and I was thriving. I just had to focus on the task at hand. Sports isn’t just about being disciplined with how you treat your body. You also need to take care of your mind and spirit. I still like to try to stick to a schedule so I don’t miss any deadlines. And I still try to focus on the task at hand. I also make sure I’m taking care of my mind and spirit.

Bonus Lesson Seek First the Kingdom – I learned this later in life. I’m grateful that sports kept me out of major trouble, but it also took first place in my heart. It was an escape for me. My favorite athletes became my idols. I got to meet, interview or photograph many of my fave Olympians. Even though I wasn’t an elite athlete, God allowed me to go to a Winter Games and Summer Games as a reporter and spectator. Those were both amazing dreams come true! God also asked me to lay down my journalism career and my obsession with the Olympics. It’s been a long and winding process and journey, but I’ve learned to keep God at the center of my life. Everything else is extra. Let’s keep first things first. “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33 NIV)

Special Shout Out to My Parents! I’m so grateful that my loving and hardworking parents supported my skating and gymnastics dreams in so many ways including by paying for lessons, taking me to practice, watching my competitions, buying me skates and outfits, etc. Not to mention taking me to watch countless skating shows (and elite gymnastics competitions), buying me sports magazines and memorabilia and letting me go on and on and on about my favorite athletes.

I’m grateful for my skating and gymnastics days.

Those days helped shape who I am today.

I still enjoy watching the world come together in friendly but fierce competition.

I’m so glad I can watch the Olympics as a normal person now. I don’t have to know every stat about the athletes or be glued to the screen for all the events.

3 Reasons I’m Still Blogging – Nancy Gavilanes

This month marks the 13th Anniversary of this Miraculous Lovely blog!

I’m so grateful for how God has been with me every step of the way.

Whether you’ve been a faithful Reader for years or you’re new, you’re welcome here.

Back when nontechie and private/introverted me was battling behind the scenes to make this blog a reality, I didn’t know how long I’d be blogging.

I’ve just taken it week by week, month by month and year by year.

Some years the ideas really flowed. Other years, I’ve wondered if I should stop blogging.

Launching my blog on the Monday of Martin Luther King Jr. Day back in January 2013 was a huge step of faith for me.

Blogging was so foreign yet freeing for this former journalist, especially after my writing had been in hiding for years.

I could’ve used this space to rant or rave about just about any topic, but God placed it on my heart to make this blog a place to celebrate His Amazing and Extravagant Love for Us, to celebrate the Miraculous and Lovely moments in life and to encourage Readers to taste and see that the Lord is good.

That’s what I still endeavor to do by the Grace of God.

Blogs come and go. That’s fine.

By God’s grace, this journaler turned journalist turned author and this Audacious Dreamer and Doer continues sharing her thoughts and updates here with whosoever stops by.

As an exhorter and evangelist, I’m honored and thrilled that I get to encourage, inspire and empower you as you walk by abounding faith, hope and love and dare to live your God-given dreams.

So, WHY am I still blogging in 2026? Why haven’t I moved on to a flashier platform or just let AI write for me?

Here’s 3 Reasons I’m Still Blogging:

Writers Write – This blog continues to be a space where I can share my thoughts, musings, updates, breakthroughs, photos, insights, etc. I still see it as a beautiful canvas where I can prayerfully share some of what’s on my mind. Sure, I speak and podcast and record YouTube videos and am active on social media, and I have my website AboundingFaith.com, etc. But I still need a place to write on a regular basis. When I first started blogging, I didn’t know it would help lead to writing books (including one for NavPress) and would help lead to speaking in various places including to a group of Christians working at the United Nations, or hosting my own events, or being a Bible school instructor or writing for Our Daily Bread Ministries. The Bible verse that is coming to mind is, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” (Luke 16:10)

It’s A Way to Reach People – I’m so glad I can connect with people through various platforms. As a writer, blogging is so special because I’m typing words on a screen that can reach Readers across the state, country and across continents. People are searching for hope and encouragement. I pray they will be blessed by something I share on this blog.

God is Still Good – God started me on this blogging journey. As I’ve said many times before, I’ll keep writing and speaking as long as He keeps giving me something to say. I’m grateful for the special moments, milestones, breakthroughs and lessons learned that I’ve gotten to share on this blog. I’m looking forward to all the wonderful moments and insights I’ll get to share going forward.

These are the top reasons that come to mind for why I’m still blogging.

After all these years, I’m still delighting in celebrating the Miraculous Lovely moments in life.

May we have many more Miraculous and Lovely moments to rejoice over this year and beyond.

Happy New Year & My “One Word” for 2026 – Nancy Gavilanes

Welcome to 2026! A new year brings so much including a fresh start and hope and excitement for what’s ahead.

A new year can also bring lots of uncertainty.

Let’s Fret Not! God knows what lies ahead. Nothing surprises Him.

As I look ahead, it’s still a milestone year for me. I hope to have much to celebrate and rejoice over this milestone year and decade.

There are many words I’ve chosen for this year and this decade. Perhaps I’ll share some of them at a later date.

For now, there is one special word I’d like to share with you today.

My “One Word” for this Year is …. ABUNDANCE!

I’m not even sure about everything that entails (as usual), but I’m looking forward to embracing an Abundance of blessings, joy, peace, love, hope, inspiration, breakthroughs, miracles and more this year and beyond!

When I think about the word Abundance, these are a few of the Bible verses that come to mind (I’ve bolded a few words for emphasis):

  • “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10 NIV) In the KJV it says that we may have “life abundantly
  • “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” (Psalm 23:1)
  • “You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” (Psalm 23:5b)
  • “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21)
  • “‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the LORD Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the LORD Almighty.” (Haggai 2:9) 
  • “The LORD blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part.” (Job 42:12a)
  • “He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.” (Psalm 18:19)
  • “Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request.” (1 Chronicles 4:10)
  • “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God.” (2 Corinthians 1:20)
  • “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

I’m so grateful that God has given me big hopes and dreams for the present and future.

I plan to continue to live out God’s call on my life in this season.

I continue to be an Audacious Dreamer and Doer because I serve a BIG GOD!

God has good works that He’s ordained and appointed for me to do (Ephesians 3:20 NIV).

I appreciate your continued prayers and support as I try to live a life worthy of my calling (Ephesians 4:1).

  • If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)

Reflecting on a Fruitful 2025 – Nancy Gavilanes

This year started out bumpy for different reasons, but I’m grateful it’s also been full of milestones!

If you recall, my “One Word” for this year has been Fruitful.

Allow me to share some highlights from this Fruitful year which included:

Celebrating my 26th devotional article being published in the Our Daily Bread devotional that’s translated into more than 50 languages and available worldwide in print and online. I’m told my devotional articles seem to be very popular across the globe. Only God could do that! Celebrating reaching the nations including by speaking to my friends at the United Nations for the third time. What a blessing to get to encourage the lovely group of Christian men and women working at the United Nations by sharing parts of my testimony and parts of my book By Faith: Adventures and Reflections on Walking with God Here and Abroad (Available on Amazon). There were around 10 nations represented in the group that met online and in person. I love how God is allowing me to reach the nations through my writing and speaking!

Celebrating a Milestone Roctober! There’s so much I could say about this Roctober, but for now I’d like my pictures to speak more than 1,000 words. Thoughts on Spiritual Gifts – Nancy Gavilanes

This month marks a major milestone in my faith walk. God called me to follow Him during one Amazing Week in September in Sydney, Australia. What a journey it’s been! I’ll be sharing more milestones soon. Here’s a few thoughts on spiritual gifts.

I’ve taken different spiritual gifts tests over the years. I usually score high in exhortation, evangelism and faith.

I still remember the first time I took a spiritual gifts test.

Back then, I kept hearing people at church say they had a “ministry” but I wasn’t sure what that meant. I thought I had missed a meeting when ministries were handed out.

When my church offered a class about spiritual gifts, I signed up. That’s when I took my first spiritual gifts test.

I was still new in my faith journey, but I’d already been serving at church.

I was stunned when I scored high in pastoring.

Who me?

Yup.

My teacher explained that many times people with the gift of pastoring are drawn to joining the Care ministry.

Oh! I was already the Care Leader in my small group for young adults.

I love how I was already serving and using my spiritual gift of pastoring by helping to shepherd and care for the flock God had entrusted to me in that season.

In typical fashion, I sometimes back into something without even realizing it’s the Lord leading me.

I also scored high in exhortation. I hadn’t heard that word before taking the class. (Why did it sound so much like extortion?)

When I found out it meant encouraging people, I was a bit disappointed.

So my gift was to cheer people on as they did something simple like crossing the street? (Not sure why that example came to mind at that moment?)

I wasn’t thrilled but it did confirm what a ministry leader had already recognized in me. I did like to encourage people.

As I grew in my faith and kept serving and encouraging people, I embraced my spiritual gift.

I remember a sister in Christ reminded me that people really need encouragement. That stuck with me.

I also scored high in evangelism. Oh, that would explain why I delighted in inviting friends and family to church and giving them Bibles and praying for strangers, etc.

Again, I was operating in my gifting without knowing it.

No wonder the very first time I volunteered at my church it was for a block party they were hosting (ah, community outreach is a form of evangelism).

It was my spiritual gifts teacher who first made the connection that my journalism background was a great match with my evangelism gift.

I had been wondering how I could use my writing background to bless others.

I was delighted to write Care notes to members of my small group.

That’s around the time I started to feel God calling me to write and speak for His glory.

As a native New Yorker, I’ve grown up with the nations all around me.

And God loves to speak to me whether I’m home or abroad.

God called me to follow Him while I was in Australia.

I felt God calling me to be an evangelist during a trip to Israel.

I’m so grateful I took a class on spiritual gifts at that particular time in my faith journey.

Taking that spiritual gifts class helped to bring clarity in some areas and confirm some things to me.

The teacher mentioned that our results could change over the years. We could grow stronger in some gifts in different seasons of life. He mentioned it was good to take a look at our top 3 gifts and also to take the test again at a later date.

I waited a few years before I took a different spiritual gifts test.

That time I scored high in the gift of faith. That made sense as the Lord had stretched my faith during five short-term missions trips to five countries. I had also grown in my faith as I read and studied the Bible and had seen God’s faithfulness in my life and the lives of others around me.

This was also somewhere around the time I was launching my AboundingFaith.com website and writing books, speaking to groups and teaching at a Bible school.

I’m still so touched when people share that what I’ve said or written was exactly what they needed to hear in that moment.

Whether it’s a person in tears in front of me thanking me or a Reader sending me a kind note, I know it’s not me. It’s the Holy Spirit working through me.

As I look at my latest spiritual gifts test results and see gifts like apostleship, prophecy and knowledge take the lead in this season, it can feel daunting but it’s also confirmation as I continue to write, speak, teach, coach, etc.

Of course, we’re to worship God more than His gifts, but it’s good to learn about spiritual gifts.

Here’s a few thoughts and Bible verses about spiritual gifts:

  • They are given by the Holy Spirit – “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.” (1 Corinthians 12:4 NIV)
  • The Holy Spirit chooses our spiritual gifts – “All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.” (1 Corinthians 12:11 NIV)
  • They are given to bless others – “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV)
  • All the gifts are special. We don’t have to compete or covet someone else’s gifts – “There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.” (1 Corinthians 5-6 NIV)
  • Gifts don’t just go away – “for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.” (Romans 11:29 NIV)
  • We’re to develop and exercise our gifts to SHINE for Christ – “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16 NIV)
  • There are good works that only we can do – “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10 NIV)
  • We’re to follow God’s plan for our life – “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” (Ephesians 4:1 NIV)

Over the years, I’ve learned that you can use different spiritual gifts in different settings. I’ve seen that especially while on the mission field or during outreaches where it feels like all the spiritual gifts are available to any one of us so we can be the hands and feet of Jesus in any given moment.

As you grow in your faith, I hope you’ll get curious about your spiritual gifts and find ways to use those gifts to be a blessing to your family, church and community.

As you grow in your relationship with Jesus, you’ll also grow in your spiritual gifts.

Reflecting on a Decade of Abounding Faith with Nancy Gavilanes

This year marks many major milestones for my work and ministry through Abounding Faith.

As I look back on this past decade, I’m in awe of God’s faithfulness. And I’m grateful for all the breakthroughs and God-given dreams He’s allowed me to experience.

After years of preparing me through prayer, studying the Bible, serving in the local church, going on outreaches across NYC and on five short-term missions trips to five countries and going to Bible school, the Lord called me into this season of writing, speaking, teaching and more for His glory!

It’s been a long and winding journey, but God has been leading and guiding me every step of the way.

Hope you enjoy this short video with highlights from the past decade.

As you may know, I’m a journaler turned journalist turned author.

This past decade, God has allowed me to write and contribute to 7 books and host 10 events. Glory!

Here’s a timeline of some of the highlights from these 10 years of being an author, speaker and more:

  • 2015 – Released Book 1 Waiting on God Well, interviewed on a local TV station and joined Instagram and X (Twitter)
  • 2016 – Released Book 2 Abounding Faith, spoke to a group of Christians working at the United Nations and gave brief testimony at Times Square Church
  • 2017 – Released Book 3 Crossing Your Jordan River, hosted first Women’s Conference (SOAR) and spoke at chapel for the first time at NYACK College
  • 2018 – Released Book 4 By Faith and hosted second Women’s Conference (Mighty Women of Valor) and launched the Abounding Faith for Today podcast
  • 2019 – Taught first Summer course (in person) for the New York School of the Bible and hosted third Women’s Conference (BELOVED)
  • 2020 – Released Book 5 Feisty Faith during the PANDEMC
  • 2021 – My Dad Moved to Heaven, contributed to Rhythms of Rest (Book 6) (Our Daily Bread Ministries’ VOICES Collection)
  • 2022 – Connected with NavPress and wrote for Our Daily Bread Ministries’ Discovery Series website
  • 2023 – Wrote God-Given Dreams (Book 7), started writing Our Daily Bread devotionals and was a Presenter for the first time for the Publishing in Color Online Conference
  • 2024 – Released God-Given Dreams (NavPress) and devotional articles start being published in Our Daily Bread worldwide
  • 2025 – 20th devotional article published in Our Daily Bread, reached 1,000 Followers on Instagram and working on different projects (stay tuned)

I couldn’t have done all of this on my own.

I’m so thankful for God’s grace as well as for the love and support from my family, my praying friends, all my Readers near and far, my Email Community, those who’ve attended my events over the years and those who’ve invited me to speak at their church and to their group, whether in person or online.

Some friends and partners along the way have included my CWEN Sisters, The Bowery Mission’s Women’s Center, Queens AGLOW, local pastors, my friends at the upstate church and local nursing homes and many others.

I appreciate your continued prayers as I plan for the next decade and beyond.

This faith journey isn’t as easy or glamorous as you may think.

It takes much prayer, dedication, perseverance, hard work, creativity and FAITH!

Mid-Year Check-In for 2025

How are we halfway through 2025?

How’s the year going for you so far?

Has it been filled with blessings or bumpier than expected?

I think it’s been a pretty Fruitful year for me so far. It’s included celebrating major book milestones such as the 1st Anniversary of my first traditionally published book, God-Given Dreams (NavPress) and the 10th Anniversary of my very first indie book, Waiting on God Well!

It’s also included having my 18th devotional article published in the Our Daily Bread devotional that’s translated into more than 50 languages and available worldwide. I was also a speaker at the Publishing in Color Spring 2025 Online Conference, and I just wrapped up my sixth summer teaching for the New York School of the Bible. I even launched the new Beloved Called Chosen collection on Abounding Faith’s online store.

Only God could make all these breakthroughs happen!
