This week I’m reflecting on the lovely time I had with the family and friends who attended my recent Waiting on God Well Book Talk and Signing event. I’m blessed that my parents were there. I’m touched by those who came and those who were praying for the success of the event. I’m delighted to hear how the book is touching lives. I’m grateful to my volunteers.

I’m encouraged to know that you are being blessed by my writing. I’m inspired to continue on this journey and follow as the Lord leads me. It makes me want to continue using my gifts to bring Glory to God!

A writer can write her heart out. There’s a joy in that, but it’s also sweet when someone actually reads your work and tells you that your writing has made a difference in his or her life!

Waiting on God Well Book Update

It’s been awhile since my book Waiting on God Well launched. As I gear up for my latest Book Talk and Signing this Saturday, I’d like to share a bit about how things with the book are going! A Big Thank You to all my readers! 

I’m so encouraged to hear how people are being touched by Waiting on God Well! As a writer, the biggest feat for me was simply getting all the words down. Sharing it with others and hearing their feedback has been such a blessing!

Readers are saying that they can’t put it down and that it’s speaking right into their situations. It’s resonating with women and men, young and older, and folks from all different backgrounds. Some are buying copies for their friends. They are being inspired as they wait on God for their promises. Glory!

To know that one small group is already studying my book is amazing. To be able to sit with them and hear what they had to share was an honor!

Getting to speak with the lovely ladies at The Bowery Mission Women’s Center was also a delight. I’m so touched to hear that Waiting on God Well has been added to their reading list and that two women are going to be writing book reports about it! Oh my!

Add to that, I got to lead a Connecting session at the recent Hope Gathering women’s conference. It was so special to gather with other women to talk, listen to each other, pray, and remind each other that Jesus is our Hope!

And I was interviewed for the podcast “Living At My Best With Donna Woolam” and the TV show “Open”.

Whoa, this is all part of what I’ve been waiting to do!

To just be free to talk to groups, large and small. To encourage folks one at a time and at gatherings. To me, this really does feel like living in the Promised Land!

Only God knows what else He has in store for this book and who else will be touched! If you would like me to come speak at your event or small group, please feel free to contact me. 3 Lessons from Writing a Book

It’s one thing to write a book. It’s a whole other thing to share it with family, friends, and even strangers. It’s been such a lovely experience so far. I’m so touched by the feedback I’m getting about my book Waiting on God Well: How to Prevent Breaking Down on Your Way to Your Breakthrough.

I’d like to share just some thoughts about what I’ve learned about this process thus far:

God’s plans are way bigger than ours! I grew up writing in diaries, making my own mini-magazines, and studied journalism. But when it came time to lay down journalism, writing a book was so far from my mind. This book started out as simply an e-book, but I’m glad that I kept moving forward and now have a printed version. The response has been such a blessing. Anything that happens from here on out is sprinkles and cherries on top! “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen” (Ephesians 3: 20-21).

We need to share our stories. People are saying they can relate to my writing, and that they are also finding it hard to wait on God. Private me could have remained silent, but I kept feeling the Lord tell me to write. And now others are being blessed. Glory! God wastes nothing. We all have a story to tell and people need to hear it. What lessons has God been showing you? What miraculous things has He done in your life? You don’t have to shout it from the roof tops, per se. Just pray and tell the next person that God places on your heart. You never know how blessed they may be. “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today,’ so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness” (Hebrews 3:13).

People can surprise you in good and bad ways. I’ve been so delighted to see some of my closest friends rejoice with me over this milestone in my life. You can tell when people are genuinely happy for you and it makes such a difference. Even friends I haven’t seen for a few years are showing up to celebrate with me. How wonderful! Then there are others that seem bent on staying away from the party. That’s ok. It’s best to leave those folks to the Lord. At times like these, it’s important to ask the Lord to help you discern who is for you and who is not. It’s also a good time to practice forgiving and showing mercy and grace. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35).

I’m sure I’ll have more lessons to share down the line. In the meantime, I hope you have a miraculous and lovely Holy Week! He is Risen!

A Taste of Waiting on God Well

I’m delighted to share the foreword for my new book Waiting on God Well. I pray it will encourage you. There’s so much packed into this short book. I hope you’ll grab your copy today. I pray that you will be blessed as you wait for God to fulfill His promises in your life. 

Foreword

Maybe it’s because I’m a native New Yorker. Or perhaps it’s because of the generation I was born in. It could be because I’m a dreamer who enjoys setting goals and a doer who delights in achieving those goals. Whatever the reason is, when it comes to certain areas of my life, one of the worst four-letter words that I hear is simply, “Wait.”

It’s just not an easy concept for me to swallow.

Please don’t get me wrong. I’m generally not an impatient person who has to be first at everything. I don’t go driving around with road rage or elbowing people out of my way on the train. Again, as a city girl, I’m all too familiar with having to stand in long lines or sit in traffic. I don’t mean that kind of waiting.

I’m talking about when you have hopes and dreams, desires and promises that you’re waiting on God to fulfill. I’m referring to the types of longings that you can’t make happen on your own. Those are the biggies in life.

At one point or another in our lives, we all have to struggle with waiting on God. Maybe you’re there right now.

What are You Waiting for?
Are you waiting to land that dream job or to meet your spouse? Praying for an unsaved loved one to receive Jesus? Believing for a healing or a miracle to be manifested? Hoping
your significant other will have a change of heart? Wondering when a door will open for a new ministry opportunity? Trusting to have a child? Perhaps all of the above?

I’m finally coming out of a long season where everything in my life seemed stagnant. Not just for days or weeks, but for years! Sure, I saw blessings here and there; but, oh, how I felt like my life was at a standstill. I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone had pressed pause on my life story. It was as if I were forgotten on the backside of the desert tending sheep like David or Moses.

Ever been there?

In the midst of this dry season, I would spend hours dreaming and scheming about my next moves and talking the ears off of trusted friends and loved ones. Surely, God didn’t want me to just sit around and do nothing! Clearly, I had to act quickly. Certainly, I needed to devise a plan of action! Not so.

It was around that time that I was getting desperate enough to make some sort of move. I went to visit a well-known church in my area.

The pastor stunned me as he said from the pulpit that he felt the Lord didn’t want him to preach the same sermon that he had shared in the earlier service. He proceeded to share a brief message about how King Saul grew impatient and took matters into his own hands while waiting for the prophet Samuel to return to the city of Gilgal to make the required offerings (1 Samuel 13: 6-14). He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel, but Samuel didn’t come, and Saul’s army started to scatter out of fear. So Saul broke God’s commandment and offered up the burnt offering. Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived and rebuked him. As a result, God rejected Saul as king.

The pastor asked the congregation if we wanted to know what God wanted us to do. I leaned in real close to make sure I didn’t miss this divine message. The pastor stated, “Wait!”

I sat there dumbfounded. God could not have spoken more clearly to me that day. The pastor gave an altar call, and I sheepishly made my way to the front of the church with the others. He prayed that God would give us the “faith that waits.” What a concept! I’m more used to having the faith to go. Asking God for the faith to wait was so foreign to me.

But there I was at the altar surrounded by a sea of people in a similar valley. Over and over again, the choir softly sang the words, “Trust Me. Trust Me.”

I left service that day with peace. I was reminded that God was in control. But now what? What does waiting on God really mean? What was a go-getter like me supposed to do during this nebulous time of waiting?

During this season, all I heard was that God had many wonderful plans for me. Exciting! But I had no idea how any of them would come about. The only words of comfort I heard God speak to me directly and through others were, “Believe,” and “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit” (Zechariah 4:6).

If God had told me to jump on a plane and go back to visit the Amazon or Africa, at least that would have been some direction. But time and time again, all I heard was to, “W-A-I-T.”

What do You do as You Wait on God?
That question stumped me. I wondered if I were missing some gene. Why was it so hard to wait for further instructions? I read books and blogs and listened to sermons about why God asks us to wait. I prayed, asking God to reveal the answers to me. He did give me glimpses and encouragement along the way. In the end, there’s no getting around it. When God says wait, He means it. So it makes such a difference how we wait.

I’m writing this book not as some expert or scholar who has this whole waiting thing down. I’m writing as a fellow pilgrim who is also on a faith journey. I’ve learned many lessons along the way and would like to share some of them with you.

It’s during these wilderness seasons that we can have a complete meltdown and become bitter, angry or depressed. Perhaps even stop dreaming and turn our back on God.

Or we can press in.

That’s right. We can choose to run to God, lean on Him, trust Him, and purpose in our hearts to wait on God no matter how long it takes.

That is easier said than done though. If you’re reading this, then my guess is you’re also finding it a challenge to wait on God. My hope is that this book will help you and encourage you while you wait.

Waiting is not passive. It’s not for the weak, but for the strong. It takes strength and courage to wait for God to give you the green light. It’s not about having a blasé attitude.

Instead, it’s about expecting God to come through in His perfect timing and open doors that no man can shut. It’s taking God at His Word and believing that He will do exactly what He has promised to do!

My prayer is that you won’t despise the process you are going through, but that you will look for Jesus, even in the tight places, because He is right there with you. He is leading, guiding, and loving you. He has not forsaken you! He will bring you through.

And when you come out of whatever valley or barren place you are in, you will be stronger, wiser, and more secure in your relationship with Jesus. A blessing beyond measure! You will be able to look back and thank God for loving you enough to not take you the easy route, but the way that stretched you and tested you, brought healing to you and helped you to grow, and allowed you to see the miraculous hand of God in your life. I pray that you will come out a living, breathing testimony to the faithfulness of our God.

Remember that God really does work everything together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). That means everything may not be good right now, but just watch how God will use your experiences to make something beautiful. What the enemy means for evil God can turn for good (Genesis 50:20)!

In the end, drawing closer to Jesus is the best gift we could ever receive. It’s better than whatever it is we are waiting for.

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

I’m delighted to announce the release of my first ebook Waiting on God Well: How to Prevent Breaking Down on Your Way to Your Breakthrough!

So many times I’ve written here about waiting on God’s timing. Now I’m sharing how to wait. We all go through dry seasons in our lives. Times where we feel like we’ve been forgotten in the back side of the desert.

What are you waiting on God for?  To move, get married, be healed, become a parent or to have a wayward child come home?

I pray this ebook will encourage you to not quit in the middle of your journey! It’s always too early to give up on the dreams God has given you.

As 2014 winds down, I must say this has been a year of joy! It started with Moving Forward and launching my website AboundingFaith.com and included a short-term missions trip to Peru and winning Our Daily Bread’s Facebook Contest for Readers. Now it’s ending with my ebook. Glory!

I wasn’t sure if I could get everything finished by the end of the year, but the Lord opened the door and I walked through it.

I’m already praying about what’s next. I’m excited about what’s to come.

Write On!

My first masterpieces!

Long before I was blogging, years before I worked at a women’s magazine or had any desire to major in journalism, and way before I was an editor at my college newspaper or the editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper, I was already enthralled with magazines.

I didn’t want to just read them. The picture above is of the collection of magazines that I created at home. The Super Fifth Graders magazine was quite an ambitious endeavor for little me. I did all the writing for the pretend celeb profiles, sports section, and movie reviews. I also did all the drawings and was the production person who “bound” the issues together with tape. Gosh, I was a magazine-making machine!

I think my one and only reader was my older sister (she’s still one of my greatest supporters). I don’t think I ever shared them with others. It was more for my enjoyment.

I’m so glad that I kept the copies of my mini-masterpieces. They’re a great snapshot of who I was back then. I also have tons of diaries and journals that chronicle my life.

There is just something that fascinates me about the written word. There’s something so special about recording and reflecting on life as it happens.

I guess that’s part of the reason why blogging seems like a natural fit for me. It’s a chance to share the ordinary ins and outs of life with all of you. It’s also a way for me to share what God has been speaking to me. I’m so touched that what I’m writing is resonating with you!

When God asked me to lay down journalism years ago, I thought my public writing days for all intents and purposes were over. Sure, I’d still journal but that would be something I kept personal. My writing went into hiding. I had nothing to really say. No reason to share my words with others.

But God had another plan.

I had a funny feeling God would one day ask me to write for His Glory. And that’s the season I’m in right now. I’m delighted that you are taking this journey with me. I’m looking forward to sharing more about what God is laying on my heart.

I know He’s speaking to you, too! Perhaps reading my posts have inspired you to tap into your inner writer. If so, what a blessing!  I encourage you to write down your prayer requests, hopes, dreams, and goals. Don’t forget to record all the answers to prayers, too!

I can’t help but think of David and how he must have spent hours writing love songs to the Lord and sharing his angst and pain and his joys and victories! Or Paul who spent hours pouring out his heart in letters to instruct and exhort the early church. What about the disciples who left us vivid accounts of Jesus’ life, ministry and miracles and Moses who meticulously wrote down the law and the prophets who recorded the messages from the Lord. They all played a part, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, in writing God’s love letter to us! Amazing!

Imagine who you could inspire by writing down your life stories and sharing them. Your friends? Your kids? Or even just yourself when you read through everything the Lord has done in your life.

What are you waiting for? Write on!

Blessings to you as you find creative ways to express your love for God and His love for you! He’s wild about you, you know!

“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)
